The CGIL General Assembly has decided that it is necessary to make the mobilisation stronger and wider to:
- Stop the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people carried out by Netanyahu's Israeli government.
- Support the non-violent mission of the Global Sumud Flotilla to open permanent humanitarian corridors, break the siege of Gaza and establish a ceasefire.
- Counter the rearmament policies of the Italian government, the European Union and NATO, which fuel a culture and practice of war that is incompatible with the values of coexistence, democracy and peace.
- Call on Italian, European and international institutions to abandon the logic of military confrontation and stop all wars, convening a peace conference under the auspices of the United Nations.
- Build an alternative to the war economy based on genuine tax reform, tackling tax evasion and taxing the super-rich, profits and income. The aim is to support wage and pension increase, repeal of laws that foster precarious work, invest in healthcare and non-self-sufficiency, public education, innovative and sustainable industrial and housing policies, guarantee safety at work, and overcome the practice of subcontracting and undeclared work.
For these reasons, the CGIL General Assembly endorses the proposals set out in the General Secretary's report and authorises the Secretariat to:
- In coordination with the Flotilla and the movement for Gaza, declare a timely general strike for all sectors in the event of attacks, blockades or seizures of the boats and materials of the Global Sumud Flotilla humanitarian mission, and in the event of a consequent failure to open humanitarian corridors to Gaza, in defence of the constitutional values that support this mission.
The General Assembly commits all trade union structures:
Organise participation in the national demonstration called by Palestinian associations in Rome on Saturday, 4 October, on the same principles that inspired the demonstrations on 6 September and the strikes on 19 September.
- Participate in the Perugia-Assisi March on 12 October, supporting all initiatives for peace and against rearmament.
- Organise workplaces assemblies and initiatives across the country, including permanent pickets, to keep these demands alive and prepare for participation in the national demonstration organised by the CGIL and “La Via Maestra” on 25 October in Rome, entitled “Democracy at Work”.
The present document was adopted unanimously, with six abstentions.
